The second edition of the SOC4AI workshop has been proposed to be held at ICSOC 2025
2nd Workshop on Service Oriented computing for AI Applications
Proposed workshop for the 23rd International Conference on Service‑Oriented Computing (ICSOC 2025)
Service‑Oriented Computing (SOC) has transformed the engineering of distributed software systems over the past two decades, while Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping every facet of the digital economy. SOC4AI 2025 will bring these two fields into a single forum to explore synergies, challenges, and emerging research directions. The workshop will address (i) how SOC principles, standards, and middleware support can accelerate the design, deployment and life‑cycle management of AI applications, and (ii) how contemporary AI techniques can enrich, automate, and optimise service‑oriented systems. The expected outcome is a curated set of high‑quality, peer‑reviewed papers published in the official ICSOC 2025 Workshops Proceedings.
Motivation and Rationale
In 2025, Service‑Oriented Computing and Artificial Intelligence are already tightly interwoven. Most commercial and open‑source AI capabilities — from foundation models and vector databases to specialised vision, speech, and decision engines — are consumed through well‑documented REST, gRPC or GraphQL service endpoints. Conversely, the application of AI techniques for discovery, monitoring, optimisation, and governance is a hot research topic. This convergence shifts the research focus: rather than questioning whether AI and SOC can be combined, we must now explore how to scale, standardise, and future‑proof their integration.
Key open challenges include:
- Interoperable AI Service Ecosystems – standardising descriptions, registries, provenance, and marketplaces to enable seamless composition of heterogeneous AI‑as‑a‑Service (AIaaS) offerings across providers, domains, and jurisdictions.
- AI‑Powered Autonomy and Governance – harnessing generative models, reinforcement learning, and causal reasoning to deliver proactive self‑optimisation, policy enforcement, and trustworthy‑AI guarantees throughout service meshes spanning cloud‑edge continua.
- AI for Sustainable and Cost‑Efficient Service Operations – reducing the energy, latency, and financial footprint of large‑scale AI service deployments via elastic scaling, intelligent placement, federated learning, and on‑device inference.
- Human‑Centric & Responsible AI as a Service – embedding transparency, explainability, fairness, and privacy‑preserving mechanisms into AI service interfaces and life‑cycle management.
With the momentum of micro‑services, cloud‑native deployments, large language models, and edge AI, 2025 is a timely moment to crystallise and consolidate a dedicated forum within ICSOC.
By convening researchers and practitioners from both communities, SOC4AI 2025 aims to consolidate best practices, surface emerging pain‑points, and articulate a shared roadmap for the next generation of intelligent, service‑driven computing.
